Caves

Kent Mason, Photographer / Conservationist

West Virginia is known for it's caves; there are over 4,000 of them. Many are small, may only be 100 feet and then become too small for a person to go further but over 100 have a mile or more of mapped passages. The tallest waterfall in WV is Suicide Falls, 139 feet, in Cass Cave and the sixth longest cave in the USA and 27th in the world is the Friars Hole Cave at 45 miles of known passages. The Sinks of Gandy, the best known cave in the state, "has a gaping mouth which swallows a little river in a gulp" (David Strother 1872) and goes a mile through a mountain to an exit on the other side. This gallery highlights caves in the WV highlands.
