The Blackwater Canyon is a very steep, rugged, heavily wooded gorge which has been created by the fast moving currents of the Blackwater River. This 1,000 foot chasm starts at an elevation of 3,000 feet and the river drops 1,250 feet over the 8 mile length of the canyon. Kayakers are challenged by the rivers class lll to V+ whitewater rapids. The canyon walls are covered with spruce, hemlock, second growth oak, maple, yellow poplar, dense undergrowth of rhododendron as well as rock outcroppings.
